VANCOUVER, Wash. (KOIN) — An explosion and car fire in the parking lot of a Vancouver apartment was arson, investigators said Friday afternoon.

Emergency calls were made by several people around 4:10 a.m. and police rushed to the Sir James Apartments, 11022 NE 18th Street. The car — with no one inside — was on fire in the parking lot.

Car owner Aaron Wintersong told KOIN 6 News he woke to the sound of an explosion.

“I saw flames when I looked out my window jetting out from my car,” he said. “Got dressed, ran down here.”

Investigators told Wintersong someone threw an explosive underneath the car but it might not have been intended for him.

“One theory is that this was directed at somebody else, and they were just moving too fast and missed and hit the wrong car,” Wintersong told KOIN 6 News.

Investigators continue to look into this case and have not yet released security camera video of the incident.
