DESCHUTES COUNTY, Ore. (KOIN) — A deer hunter was arrested Monday morning after he fatally shot his hunting partner with an arrow, deputies said.

Michael S. Pekarek, 52, called 911 at 7:40 a.m. and said he shot his partner while they were bow hunting near La Pine, according to Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.

Dispatchers told Pekarek how to perform CPR, which he reportedly did until authorities arrived. Jeffrey L. Cummings, 45, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Investigators learned Pekarek and Cummings were bow hunting on USFS 9736 when they saw a mule deer on the west side of the road and got out of their car. Pekarek reportedly saw the deer and was ready to shoot when the animal moved out of view.

He allegedly turned with his bow pointed toward Cummings to tell him the deer was moving his way. That’s when deputies said Pekarek released his arrow, striking Cummings in the abdomen. Cummings fell down and later died, deputies said.

Pekarek was arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide. His bail is set at $50,000.

The investigation continues.
