PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The city of Portland woke up to a mess on the streets on Friday.
Anti-Trump rioters destroyed property as peaceful protests turned violent. Portland Police say anarchists took over the protest, which began at 5 p.m. Thursday. By 8 p.m., police declared that the protest had turned into a riot.
Around 4,000 people joined as the night went on and 25 were arrested. Portland Police Chief Mike Marshman estimates the cost of the damage at more than $1 Million.
Many businesses throughout downtown and the Pearl District had smashed windows and graffiti and a car dealership in NE Portland suffered damage to dozens of brand new cars.
Not all damage is visible, however. A truck driver with a small local business said the highway obstruction is costing him hundreds of dollars in cancelled or delayed deliveries every day.
Ross Munro said it’s hard when he doesn’t know when the protests will happen again, causing the roads to close.
“The uncertainty means that loads cancel. So the revenue can add up to thousands and thousands of dollars very very quickly, that a small business like ours can’t afford to lose,”Munro said. “And you can’t take a chance that you’re going to get stuck in it and honestly put the life of the driver at risk.”
It might be a few days before some businesses can secure the broken glass and reopen.
Volunteers have been out Friday helping with the cleanup effort, including some of the peaceful protesters that were out before the rioters took over.
26 people were arrested for their involvement in Thursday’s riot.
