EUGENE, Ore. (KOIN) – A Eugene pimp who pleaded guilty to trafficking a 16-year-old girl for sex was given 13 years in prison, officials say.
Darryl Tyrone Norwood Jr., 29, was sentenced on Tuesday in U.S. District Court.
His attorney, Mark B. Weintraub, had asked for the mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years.
Norwood is a violent criminal who “knowingly trafficked a minor to engage in commercial sex acts,” according to documents from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The convict previously served a lengthy sentence for firing a gun into a home with people inside.
“A sentence of 188 months in prison is both warranted and necessary to protect future victims and the public,” authorities said.
The investigation into Norwood started in February 2014 when the FBI and Eugene Police Department were investigating prostitution on the website Backpage.Com.
Federal prosecutors described Norwood’s behavior as “dangerous and alarming.”
Records show while in custody, Norwood continued to put pressure on a female to participate in sex acts.
“Mr. Norwood is not a model citizen, but he was also deprived of advantages many citizens take for granted,” wrote Weintraub.
Weintraub added any sentence longer than 10 years would contribute to racial disparity.
