FOREST GROVE, Ore. (KOIN) — A 23-year-old transient faces a variety of charges, including the attempted assault of a police officer after being arrested late Saturday night in Forest Grove.

Around 10:20 p.m., a woman called 911 about a man trying to break into her home in the 2200 block of 23rd Avenue, Forest Grove police said. Before officers arrived, the man got inside and stole a purse, then ran away.

Witness reports helped police track the suspect, later identified as James Daniel O’Neill, to a car being broken into near the Pacific University campus.

O’Neill was found about 20 minutes later and, while being taken into custody, tried to bite an officer, Forest Grove Capt. Mike Herb said in a release.

The 23-year-old is being held for 1st-degree burglary, 2nd-degree theft, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and the attempted assault on a police officer.

O’Neill, last known to be connected to a Cornelius address, is slated to be arraigned Monday.
