Reward offered for information on cat strangulation

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Oregon Humane Society is looking for answers after a cat was strangled and left in Milwaukie’s Scott Park in March.

“This is just a brutal crime,” spokesperson David Lytle. “We hate to see incidents like this at the Oregon Humane Society.”

The cat was found with an electrical cord tied around its neck in the Scott Park amphitheater on March 28. She was a spayed, domestic long hair cat with grey fur. She was about 1 year old.

Lytle said that fact that she was spayed indicates she may have had an owner, but they haven’t identified anyone yet.

“We’re here dedicated to healing animal that are hurt and broken and abandoned and bringing them back, and we know they can have great lives,” Lytle said. “We have a 100% success rate for adopting pets here at OHS so there’s never a reason to abandon a pet or treat a pet like this. It’s a criminal act and we just want to find justice for this pet.”

The Oregon Humane Society is offering $500 for information that will lead to the person responsible being arrested and convicted.

There are 2 Oregon State Police officers commissioned by the Humane Society to investigate animal crimes across the state. Along with veterinarians trained to do necropsies and forensics, they work to find culprits of animal cruelty.

“It’s a felony to torture and kill an animal in Oregon,” Lytle said. “And it’s also a red flag because most people who kill a defenseless animal, they can go on to be a menace to their spouse, to their children, commit more crimes against people. That’s why it’s such a high priority to get on these criminal when we can.”

So far there are no known witnesses and no leads in the case, but the Oregon Human Society hopes offering a reward will help someone who know something come forward.
