PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A captain with the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office was indicted and arrested Friday for stealing more than $200,000 of taxpayer money.

Scott Beard, 45, faces federal charges that could send him to prison for ten years.

According to court documents, Beard used his position within the sheriff’s office to embezzle the money. Beard was responsible for expenses related to undercover drug purchases and witness. The Deschutes County Finance Department would issue checks directly to Beard for these expenses, which Beard would inflate. He would then pocket the difference.

Beard is also accused of stealing cash that was seized as evidence during investigations.

Overall, he embezzled $205,747.

During this time, the U.S. Attorney alleges that Beard started a sexual relationship with 35-year-old Krista Mudrick, who is also named in the indictment. Beard was Mudrick’s supervisor at the sheriff’s office. Beard used the embezzled funds to buy Mudrick a $6,700 Harley Davidson motorcycle, breast augmentation and other cosmetic surgery, and a trip to Amsterdam and South Africa. The federal government also accuses Beard of laundering the money by depositing it in Mudrick’s bank account.

Beard and Mudrick are scheduled to be arraigned Monday in federal court in Eugene. Beard is charged with theft, money laundering and passport fraud. Mudrick is charged with lying to federal law enforcement officers.
