GRESHAM, Ore. (KOIN) – A Fairview Police officer shot late Wednesday is expected to survive, according to law enforcement officials.
The officer, assigned to the East Metro Gang Enforcement Team, was riding in a two-person patrol car with his partner, who is assigned with the Gresham Police Department.
The two were first on scene after responding to report of a vehicle crash near Southeast 188th and East Burnside just before 11 p.m.
Police say the driver fled the scene of the crash. When the Fairview officer and his partner arrived, they located the driver, an adult man, in the 18900 block of Northeast Couch.
“A radio call indicating they located the suspect was quickly followed by ‘shots fired’ and ‘officer hit,’” the Gresham Police Department said in a prepared statement.
The officer was transported to a local trauma hospital in Portland.
The driver of the vehicle that crashed was also shot and taken to a separate trauma hospital.
Both the suspect and the officer are expected to survive their injuries, according to police.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call a police tip line at 503.618.2719.
All officers directly involved in the incident have been placed on leave during the initial phases of the investigation. Police said that is a standard procedure.
